Debbie Newton - Advertising Specialist

Now into my 17th year as an Advertising Account Executive at the Kingston
Whig-Standard, I look back at all the wonderful advertisers I've had the privilege to
work with and the endless stream of advertisements that have lined the pages of
Kingston Ontario's daily newspaper. Advertising and marketing are ongoing
adventures in the business world and it is my job to partner with Whig clients and
create advertising campaigns to drive traffic to their doors.

The World of Retail

1. Location Location Location! 2. Competition

You are a merchant - a purveyor of goods and services. You want your share of the business! You want customers to enter your establishment and spend! How do you achieve this? There are many points to consider when marketing your business.

The following two points I consider the most important.

Where you hang your shingle is important to your success. Setting up your store on a high traffic street, or next to a bank, for instance can bring shoppers to your door.

If you choose a less traveled area for your store location you may have to market your business as a destination. This means creative advertising campaigns to draw your customers to your door.

The more businesses that offer the same products and services that you do, the more advertising you'll need to obtain your share of the market.
